Who or What is the Holy Spirit? Part 1

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:5

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:17, 18

Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? ...What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1 Corinthians 6:15, 19

Both Christ and the Holy Spirit acting as mediator.

For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Ephesians 2:18

The Spirit itself maketh intercession (mediate) for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. ...He maketh intercession (mediate) for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26, 27

For there is one God, and one mediator (intercessor) between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 1 Timothy 2:5

But the Bible clearly says there is only one mediator, or intercessor, between God and man, Jesus Christ. The role of intercessor is not the only thing Christ and the Holy Spirit have in common.

Both Christ and the Holy Spirit are truth and speak not of themselves but speak what they hear.

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. Deuteronomy 18:18

When he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. John 16:13

(Jesus, speaking of himself) I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. John 8:28

Jesus saith unto them, I am the way, the truth, and the life: John 14:6

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; Matthew 11:29

For one is your Master (G2519: guide/teacher), even Christ. Matthew 23:10

Just as the Bible says there is only one mediator between God and man, the Bible tells us we have only one master, or teacher, again, Christ Jesus.

But the Comforter (G3875: comforter/advocate), which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:26

My little children, these thing write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate (again G3875) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1

Another similarity between Christ, (the Word made flesh), and the Holy Spirit is that we are sanctified by them.

Being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. Romans 15:16

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ...And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, John 1:1, 14

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17

We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:10

Scripture tells us that God created everything by his Word and that his son, Jesus, is the Word. Scripture also tells us that it is only through Jesus we may be saved (Acts 4:12). Jesus is both our Creator and Redeemer.

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things and by him all things consist. Colossians 1:16-17

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:1-3

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; Hebrew 12:2

All scripture is given by inspiration (G2315: divinely breathed in) of God, 2 Timothy 3:16

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: John 20:21

I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:16-17

The Holy Spirit which dwells in us is Christ's own spirit. It is Christ who intercedes on our behalf before the Father. It is Christ, who is the Word of God made flesh, that teaches us and comforts us. It is Christ who dwells in us.

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4

I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. ...Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. John 6:51, 53

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? 2 Corinthians 13:5

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. Romans 8:9, 10

Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you the hope of glory. Colossians 1:26-27

For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, ...that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith. Ephesians 3:14, 15-17

Once again, who is it that stands at the door to our hearts asking to be let in?

Behold, I (Jesus) stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. ...He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. Revelation 3:20, 22
