Two Sabbaths: Part 1

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Genesis 2:1-3

As seen above, the Sabbath was instituted at Creation and sanctified holy by God. We also see below, that the Sabbath was kept by God's people before the law was given at Mount Sinai. This clearly shows the Sabbath's pre-existence to the written law and was created for mankind, not the Jew alone, for all time.

Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none. Exodus 16:26

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be call least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:17-19

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD. Isaiah 66:22, 23

The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Mark 2:27-28

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether thy be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: Colossians 1:16

Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. Romans 3:31

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross. Colossians 2:14

The sabbath is part of the ten commandments that were written in stone by the finger of God Himself and kept inside the ark of the covenant. Meanwhile, the law of Moses, given by God, was written by Moses on parchment and placed outside the ark. Clearly there is a distinction between these two laws.

And the LORD delivered unto me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. Deuteronomy 9:10

At that time the LORD said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make thee an ark of wood. And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which thou brakest, and thou shalt put them in the ark. Deuteronomy 10:1-2

And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the word of this law in a book, until they were finished, that Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. Deuteronomy 31:24-26

But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: for then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. Matthew 24:20-21

Jesus would not have told His followers to pray this prayer, after His death, if the law was to be done away with at the cross. And again, if any of the ten commandments were done away with at the cross, Jesus's followers would not have rested on the Sabbath day following His crucifixion.

And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. Luke 23:54-56

Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you. Exodus 31:13

Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. Exodus 31:14-15

It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six day the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. Exodus 31:17

The Sabbath is a sign between God and His people and the keeping of the Sabbath by God's people is a perpetual (never ending or changing) sign of His covenant.

For I am the LORD, I change not. Malachi 3:6

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Hebrews 13:8

My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Psalms 89:34
